Oil Tank Frequently Asked Questions

Tank FAQs

1. What is a tank Protection Program and why do I need it?

Tank Protection is coverage for problems associated with a release (leakage) of oil from your fuel storage system (oil lines & tank). Although oil releases are very unusual, they do occur in both underground and aboveground tanks, and this protects you from having to pay for costly remediation (cleanup). More

2. Can I leave my old underground oil tank in the ground and just install a new one in my basement?

If you take an underground tank out of service, it cannot just be left empty. CT legislation requires that an underground tank either be removed from the ground or legally abandoned in place. More

3. When oil is delivered, does my tank get filled to the top?

No, oil tanks are not topped off. Each tank, whether underground or above ground has a vent alarm that signals when a tank is full. The vent alarm stops whistling when oil reaches the end of the vent alarm, signaling the driver to stop filling the tank.

4. What are the possible problems with an ABT (above ground tank) installed outside?

Exposed oil lines outside can develop condensation, and in extremely cold weather, the condensation can frost and restrict the flow of oil from the tank to the heating equipment. Also, an outside tank is affected by the weather, and keeping the tank free from rust becomes a regular maintenance issue.

5. Where should I install my new ABT?

The tank should be installed in a controlled environment. A basement, garage, or enclosed sheds are the preferred locations. In this way, the tank, oil lines, and condition of the tank will not be affected by weather and virtually no maintenance will be required on the tank.Contact Jim Donaher at jdonaher@gaultenergy.com, or call (203) 227-5181 to discuss your current tank needs and how we can assist you.
